What is a podcast?

A podcast is a series of digital content presented via audio or video files that are released as episodes via a web syndication feed (Ex. RSS, Atom). Podcasting is often compared to radio; however, from a distribution point of view it is closer to traditional brick and mortar products such as newspapers and magazines since it content is presented as a live broadcast. How do you listen to a podcast?

The first thing you should know is that you don’t need an iPod to listen to a podcast. Podcasts are simply digital files (audio or video) stored on the producer’s web space and presented to you on a podcast directory or through a feed so you can just stream the content podcast to your computer using software such as Windows Media Player or Winamp. Podcast directories like netcastia.com provide built-in players and subscription management to listen on their website.
