Getting Professional Yoga…For Free! 5 Ways to A Cost-Free Practice

Thinking you’d benefit from daily yoga practice but that classes from professional yoga instructors will be too costly? Think again. More than ever, it is easy, fast and well within anyone’s reach to practice yoga anywhere, and for free. From beginner to total expert, all you need to know is where to look.

USE ITUNES:

If you don’t have iTunes, you can download it for free. Go to the iTunes Store, and then click on the Podcasts prompt (at the far left of the screen). You will see the Podcasts menu open up and give you the option of both audio and video podcasts, as well as a variety of topical categories (ie: Arts, Business, Health etc.)

Decide if you are comfortable with an audio only podcast, or would prefer a video podcast. Click on that option accordingly. Or, if you’d rather, you can click on “Health” and an entire series of different yoga podcasts (most of them free!) will present themselves.

Download different podcasts to see which instructor and style suits you best. There are podcasts that average about 20 minutes, and those which run a full 90 minutes. Experienced and beginner. It’s up to you. When you find a podcast you like, see if there is the option to “Subscribe” to it, and continue to get any new classes automatically downloaded (for free) to your iTunes account to keep things interesting and fresh.

A real bonus to using the iTunes podcasts, is that often, the instructors will invite you, the subscriber, to email them with specific class requests (ie: “please do a class just for abs”), or questions to be used or answered in their future broadcasts. This makes iTunes a more interactive option than a CD or DVD.

CHECK OUT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY:

If you can, do this online as well. Most cities (and increasingly, smaller towns) boast library systems that operate on a single, massive catalogue or database. Patrons can often login to the system from home, 24/7, and search for any item the library stocks. You may need to get yourself a library card and register for this service. Do it! It’s almost always free.

Search your library’s database for yoga CDs and DVDs. Place a ‘hold request’ on whichever (and however many) you want to give a try. Many libraries will allow you to ‘order’ anything from within their database (at your home branch or not), and have it brought (again, for free) to your home branch, where you can pick it up. Usually you can also return these items to your home branch.

USE YOGATODAY.COM:

A great website that offers one hour, free classes you can watch on your computer, anytime. Professional instructors who specialize in different schools of yoga teach outdoors in stunningly beautiful parks and mountain ranges. The yogini is flanked by two participants in the session which provides the online viewer the opportunity to see many poses from different angles, and
