A Podcast Tutorial [Podcasting 101]

Published on April 7th, 2010 in Podcasting

In this video, I do my best to provide a podcasting tutorial. I’ve received a great deal of requests to do this. I found it difficult to do a podcasting tutorial, without actually doing a podcast. Rather than do that, I go into the basic principles to maintain a successful podcast. This tutorial is broken out into 3 parts: Motivation, Equipment, and Production. In terms of motivation, make sure you choose a topic you are passionate about. Ask yourself the following before choosing a topic: “Am I able to talk about this topic for 15 minutes to someone who knows absolutely nothing about it” If you can do this, then you have a decent candidate for a topic. Choosing a topic is key to prevent podfading. As for equipment, start with a cheap microphone (microphone/headsets are fine and fairly cheap at Best Buy), your computer, and cheap software. The software I recommend you start with is Audacity (bit.ly which is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. There’s a good chance you’re using one of these os’s, so Audacity is a good choice. As you get a few episodes under your belt, then it’s time to think about possibly upgrading your setup to a condenser mic/mixer setup. Finally, there’s production. Come up with a schedule that you’ll be able to keep. Don’t commit to a daily podcast right from the start. I recommend starting with a weekly or monthly schedule and see how it works out. There’s also the option of live podcasting vs offline podcasting. I recommend sticking with an

I’m glad I did not cancel it after the first joke (I can’t stand “funny” people when I am dead serious about learning something).

But… I loved the guy. Very honest, very instructive and VERY inspirational…

I will find out more about this guy.

He must have meant the elevator being broken or something!

I made a separate video about this. Don’t update like Dash said.

  19. iobuffa

    Google “chapter master” It’s $15

  20. iobuffa

yes, Ubercaster has an edit section which looks very similar to Garageband. You can edit each track from there. Sometimes when I make mistakes and I need to fix something, I use this.

Ebay. Search for Microphone Arm or something similar. I have a condenser mic and I can position it one of two ways, there is no real benefit for me to put it upside down as long as it’s facing the right direction.

How do I divide my podcast into chapters on a pc?,
Each time I google or keep searching I only get info related to a mac.
    please help.

    Nice little tutorial.

Where did you get your microphone stand? I’ve seen that type a few times in other video podcasts but can’t seem to locate it myself.

Is there any benefit to mounting the microphone upside down rather than right side up?

You have just motivated me to do a podcast! Thank’s Bwana!!

Is there a way to edit the take on uber cast and then use the software to publish it?
