Rogers And Fido In Canada With Apple iPhone

Published on May 1st, 2011 in iPhone

Using An Apple iPhone in Canada

Many people have approached me and ask, “Where did you buy your iPhone in Canada?” “I didn’t buy my iPhone in Canada! I bought it from Seattle, WA, and unlocked the iPhone myself!” is my answer to that question. You heard me right folks. iPhones in Canada have been purchased majority of them by Canucks who went down to the States to purchase them. Either they unlocked the iPhone in Canada themselves, or paid someone to unlock it for them after they purchase it.

What Mobile Networks Work With An iPhone in Canada?

GSM networks available in Canada are only two. We have Rogers. Fido is another network which is owned by Rogers.. In Canada, these are the two networks you can use your iPhone with. Hooking up you iPhone in Canada is a very simple process. First, you need to get a hold of an iPhone. All you have to do is pop the SIM card tray out of the top of the iPhone with a paperclip, and insert your Rogers or Fido SIM card, Once it has been “jailbreak” (iTunes activation has been bypassed) and “unlocked” (opened to be used with any GSM network; ie–Fido, Rogers, etc.) Then turn you phone back on and there, you will now have a working iPhone in Canada. iPhone firmware 1.1.2 cannot be software unlocked at the moment in Canada since they are new iPhones. In unlocking these iPhones you have to use a TurboSIM method, which requires a slight modification of your SIM card which then fits into a “tray” that slides into your iPhone. Tricking your iPhone and allowing it to be used with any GSM network in Canada (or the world!) is what this “tray” does. What Features Work on the iPhone in Canada?

With your “jailbreak” and “unlocked” iPhone in Canada, every single feature still works. “Visual Voice mail”, is the only feature that does not work though it is only available to AT&T subscribers in the USA. All other features such as YouTube, WiFi, EDGE, Camera, Weather, Stocks, iPod, Calculator, Mail, Google Maps, SMS, work with your iPhone in Canada. Your SMS voice mail notifications may not work with Rogers or Fido that would depend on your firmware that you are running. A 3rd party application can be installed by Users on firmware version 1.1.1 that will allow for the iPhone receiving SMS voice mail notifications. 3rd party applications to send MMS messages, install games, and other fun programs are also there. The possibilities are limitless!
